Is green tea good for weight loss?

Green tea is regarded as one of the healthiest drinks in the world. Some claim that it aids weight loss and can even reduce your risk of cancer! In this article we’ll look at some of the health benefits of green tea - or more specifically, green tea extract. Does green tea help you burn body fat? Does it boost your metabolism? Are there any side effects? Is green tea good for weight loss? Read on to find out…

What is green tea?

Green tea originates from China and has been enjoyed in East Asian countries for thousands of years. Just like traditional black tea, it is made from the Camellia sinensis plant. The only difference is that green tea uses unprocessed, unfermented tea leaves which gives it its distinctive emerald-green colour.

You can buy green tea in tea bags or as fresh leaves. Green tea extract is often found in weight loss supplements.

Does green tea help you burn body fat?

One of the major benefits of green tea is the fact that it’s rich in antioxidants - substances that reduce harm to cells in your body and help prevent various diseases including diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

There are different types of antioxidants. Green tea contains high levels of an antioxidant called Epigallocatechin Gallate (or EGCG) which is known to increase your metabolism. A higher metabolism makes it easier to shift body fat when you exercise.

Green tea also contains a moderate amount of caffeine (around 25 - 40mg per cup), another compound that can speed up your metabolism and help burn more energy during physical activity.

Finally, the antioxidants in green tea encourage the production of norepinephrine - a naturally occurring hormone that breaks down the fat in fat cells.

Does it boost your metabolism?

Your body is constantly burning energy, even when you’re sitting down and resting. The exact amount you burn depends on a number of factors - such as your age, weight, sex, body composition and genetics.

Studies have shown that green tea can increase the calories you burn at rest by around 3 to 8 per cent

Are there any side effects?

Green tea is a natural substance with no major side effects. That said, consuming an excessive amount of caffeine can cause symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, nausea and poor quality sleep. If you are taking a green tea supplement, we recommend starting on a small dose to see how your body responds.
